The first LEED Platinum supermarket in the United States, the Augusta store is projected to be 44 percent more energy-efficient than a typical supermarket. Green features include geothermal heating and cooling, solar photovoltaic panels, high- efficiency refrigeration and energy-efficient lighting. A green roof provides insulation and controls storm water runoff. Construction recycling was targeted at 95 percent. This pilot store is part of a larger initiative to test green designs for future Hannaford stores.

The program will commence at University of Maine Augusta Khlar Center with a joint presentation by building designer WBRC Architects-Engineers and owner Hannaford Bros. followed by a guided tour of the supermarket. Presenters: Mat Ward, Project Manager, WBRC Architects-Engineers and Fred Conlogue, Director of Design, Hannaford Bros.
