Committees

Architects, Associates, Designers and others interested in architecture in Maine come together in Committees to carry out the mission of AIA Maine. The tasks are many and the rewards are great, not least of which is the opportunity to forge new friendships and professional associations while promoting good design throughout the State.

We welcome new volunteers! If you would like to join a Committee, please contact our Executive Director Susan Koch or the Committee Chairs listed below for more information about the roles and needs of individual Committees, or simply attend a meeting of the Committee.

All AIA Maine meetings are open.  Please go to our Event page for meeting times and locations.

Committee on the Environment (COTE)

The Committee on the Environment (COTE) works to advance, disseminate, and advocate—to the profession, the building industry, the academy, and the public—design practices that integrate built and natural systems and enhance both the design quality and environmental performance of the built environment.

Committee Chair: John Gordon, AIA jpg@johngordonarch.com

Design Committee

The Design Committee works to advance the benefits of good design and to celebrate design excellence in Maine through AIA Maine's biennial Design Awards Program and, with the Program Committee, by organizing design lectures for members and the public.  In 2009, the Design Committee will organize its first Ideas Competition, a concept design competition open to architecture students, graduates and licensed professionals.  The next Design Awards Program will be held in 2010.

Committee Chair: Bruce Norelius, AIA norelius@eena.com

Outreach Committee

The Outreach Committee:

  • offers programs and educational opportunities to the general public, promoting good design and the value of the AIA architect
  • strengthens connections with architectural students and those interested in the architectural profession in order to increase collaboration and continued education throughout the profession
  • promotes service to the community and demonstrates that the AIA architect can serve as leaders in our communities, advocates for good design and responsible stewardship of the environment

External Committees

AIA Maine supports, both financially and with participating membership, several external Committees whose missions further the interests of Maine architects and the quality of the built environment in Maine, including:

AIA New England www.aianewengland.org

This Regional Component of the AIA includes nine state and local Chapters of the AIA in the six New England states; Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.  AIA New England presents a Regional Conference each year, which includes a Design Awards Program.

Architects|Engineers Legislative Task Force

Comprised of Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Landscape Architects, the task force monitors and advocates for or against legislation before the Maine State Legislature, and hosts an Annual Legislative Breakfast for legislators as an opportunity for design and construction professionals to meet and speak to their representatives about issues of importance to our industry and the State of Maine.

Maine Advisory Joint Industry Council (MAJIC)

Through this Committee, representatives of AIA Maine, Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Maine and American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Maine have a forum in which to build mutual trust and respect through open communication while advancing their common goal of designing and constructing projects, together, of the highest quality and value at a fair and reasonable price.

Maine QBS Council www.meqbs.org

This Council, consisting of representatives of AIA Maine, ACEC of Maine and the Maine Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE), works to increase awareness, understanding and voluntary use of Qualifications Based Selection (QBS) of design services.
