State Fire Marshal’s Office clarification regarding the requirements for a NFPA 96 compliant hood and duct system installation in Rooming and Lodgings containing 5 rooms or less.

Rooming and Lodging

• The facility shall be fully sprinklered.
• The facility shall contain no more than five (5) rooms for rent.
• The facility shall meet all the requirements of the NFPA 101 adopted at the time of construction or conversion to a rooming and lodging facility.

If all the above conditions are met then the requirements for a NFPA 96 Hood and Duct system can be reduced to a residential hood, which shall include a factory installed residential suppression system within the hood.

The stove and hood shall be maintained and kept clean from grease accumulation at all times.

This waiver of requirements may be revoked at any time for just cause.

This waiver does not supersede or nullify more stringent requirements that may be imposed by local authorities having jurisdiction.
